What to do if you receive an IRS letter
Updated: 2026
An IRS letter does not always mean something is wrong, but it should not be ignored. First, identify what is being requested and what deadline applies.
Check the basic details first
Look for the notice number, tax year, letter date, response deadline, and any amount shown.
Different notices require different responses: the IRS may request information, report a change, or ask for payment.
Gather documents
Useful records include the notice, the return for that year, W-2, 1099, payment records, credits, dependents, expenses, or other items involved.
If the letter relates to state tax, identify which state agency sent it.
Do not respond at random
It is usually not helpful to send random documents or pay an amount without understanding the reason.
First compare the notice with the return and records, then choose the appropriate response.
Security
Do not send IRS letters, SSN, or tax documents through the regular contact form.
After the initial contact, we will explain the secure method for sending copies.
