Tax filing extension: Form 4868
Updated: 2026
Form 4868 can provide additional time to file an individual federal tax return, but it does not extend the time to pay tax.
What Form 4868 does
Form 4868 is used to request an automatic extension of time to file an individual federal income tax return. For most calendar-year taxpayers, a timely request provides up to six additional months to file.
The extension request must be made by the original filing due date. It gives more time to prepare the return, but the return still has to be filed later.
The payment deadline does not move
An extension to file is not an extension to pay. If tax is expected to be due, the balance generally should be estimated and paid by the original due date to reduce possible interest and penalties.
For that reason, an extension should not be treated as a way to postpone the entire tax question until fall. Before requesting Form 4868, it helps to have at least a reasonable picture of income, withholding, and payments already made.
What to prepare
Useful records include the prior-year return, available W-2 and 1099 forms, other income information, tax withholding, estimated payments, and expected deductions or credits.
If the year involved multiple states, foreign income, or another unusual issue, mention that before filing the extension because a federal extension does not automatically determine each state filing requirement.
After the extension
After an extension is accepted, the return still needs to be completed and filed by the extended due date. Keep the Form 4868 filing or electronic confirmation with your records.
Special filing rules can apply to taxpayers living outside the United States or to other unusual situations, so those cases should be reviewed separately.
What to prepare
