Our tax practice

A brief overview of the practice, experience, and approach to tax documents.

Careful tax return preparation for routine and non-standard situations.

Diana Stelmakh Tax Services LLC is a tax practice specializing in U.S. individual tax returns. We work with clients in the U.S. and abroad, including situations where the obligation to file a U.S. tax return continues while living in another country.

One of the strengths of our practice is handling cases where ordinary W-2 and 1099 income is not the whole picture: foreign income, accounts outside the U.S., documents from another country, moving between states, or FBAR / FinCEN questions. We understand these issues not only from instructions, but also from practical experience: we know which questions to ask, which documents to review, and where mistakes most often occur. In these situations, it is not enough to fill out a form; the facts, documents, and applicable reporting requirements must be reviewed carefully.

Situations we help with

You do not need to know every form in advance. Briefly describe your situation and we will explain which documents are needed.

U.S. tax return preparation

How it works

First, you briefly describe the situation. Then you prepare the documents, share them securely, and review the result before filing.

Facts and documents first — calculation after that.

We review facts and documents first, then prepare the return, provide it for review, and file only after approval, signature, and payment.

When not to leave filing until the last moment

If one item applies, contact us early so there is time to review.

Pricing starting points

Starting guidelines for common situations. Exact fee after completing the questionnaire and initial document review.

Important note

The listed prices do not form an exhaustive price list. The final fee depends on the amount of information provided, the number and type of tax forms, states involved, additional review needed, and the quality of prepared documents. For an exact calculation, we will ask you to complete a short questionnaire and upload the necessary documents through a secure channel. After the initial document review, we will confirm the scope of work and the final fee.

Common questions

Short answers to questions clients usually ask before starting.

Getting started

This is my first U.S. tax return. Where do I start?

Start with a short description of your situation: status, income sources, family/dependents, states of residence, and any foreign income or accounts.

Can we start if not all documents are ready yet?

Yes. You can start by describing the situation, but preparation and filing require complete documents and support for income, deductions, and credits.

Do I need to file if my income was small?

It depends on income type, filing status, withholding, self-employment, and possible credits. Even a small amount of income may need review.

How do I choose a filing status?

Filing status depends on marital status, dependents, and the facts of the year. If there is uncertainty, it should be checked before calculating the return.

What if I recently arrived in the U.S. or changed status?

We need to review entry dates, immigration status, tax residency, foreign income, and possible reporting requirements.

Documents and security

How can I send documents?

Documents are shared through a secure client channel. Sensitive documents should not be sent openly through regular email or messengers. After the initial contact, we will explain the secure way to send documents.

Why should SSN and tax documents not be sent by regular email?

SSN, W-2, 1099, ID, and tax documents contain sensitive data. These files should be transmitted through a secure method after the initial contact.

What if a 1099 or another form has not arrived yet?

We first check whether the form is expected and what income records are available. Before filing, the data should be complete to avoid missing income or amending later.

Should I keep documents after filing?

Yes. Keep a copy of the return and supporting records for income, deductions, credits, children, business activity, foreign accounts, and IRS letters.

Fees and timing

What affects the price?

Forms, states, income sources, Schedule C activity, foreign income, foreign accounts, and any additional explanations required.

How long does preparation take?

Timing depends on the complexity of the return and whether the documents are complete. After the initial review, we provide a realistic estimate.

Return preparation and filing

Can W-2 and 1099 income be filed together?

Yes. W-2, 1099, and other income forms are reported within one individual return when they belong to the same taxpayer.

What if I had Marketplace health insurance?

Form 1095-A is required. A return with Marketplace coverage can be incorrect without it, especially if the advance premium tax credit was received.

Can a prior-year return be amended or prepared?

An amended return or prior-year filing depends on documents, deadlines, and the reason for the correction. We first review the original return and new information.

Can the return be filed without my final confirmation?

No. Before filing, the client must have the opportunity to review the return and sign the required authorizations. A return is not filed without the client’s final confirmation.

Special situations

Do you work with 1099 income / Schedule C clients?

Yes. Schedule C requires income records, categorized expenses, and supporting documents such as mileage, supplies, software, insurance, home office, and other costs.

What if I moved between states?

We review move dates, states of residence and work, state W-2 details, and remote-work facts. This may affect state returns.

What if I have foreign income?

These situations must be reviewed based on the facts: country, type of income, foreign taxes already paid, and supporting documents.

Do foreign accounts need to be reported?

In some cases, yes. If you have bank or financial accounts outside the U.S., we separately check possible FBAR / FinCEN reporting.

Can I contact you about an IRS letter?

Yes. You can start with an initial review of the IRS notice. We will look at what is being requested, the response deadlines, and which documents may be needed. If the issue is outside the scope of an initial review or requires separate professional representation, we will say that in advance.

Service format

Can we work together if I am outside the U.S.?

Yes. We work with clients in the U.S. and abroad when the client still has an obligation to file a U.S. individual tax return. In these situations, we separately review tax status, income sources, documents from another country, and possible reporting for foreign accounts or income.

Do you work remotely?

Yes, we work remotely with clients in the U.S. and abroad. Federal returns can usually be prepared remotely; for state returns, we separately review applicable state requirements.

Which services are outside your scope?

The main focus is U.S. individual tax returns. Payroll, sales tax, corporate returns, and full bookkeeping are not included in standard Form 1040 preparation. If a matter is outside our scope, we will say so before preparation begins.
