Form 1095-A and Marketplace health insurance
Updated: 2026
If you had health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace during the year, Form 1095-A and Form 8962 may be an important part of your tax return.
Why it matters
Form 1095-A reports Marketplace coverage information, premiums, and any advance Premium Tax Credit that may have been paid. The information is used to calculate or reconcile the Premium Tax Credit on the return.
If you are expecting Form 1095-A, it is usually better not to file until the form is received or the Marketplace information is checked. An incorrect 1095-A can affect the return result or lead to follow-up questions.
Documents to prepare
Gather Form 1095-A for the tax year, coverage months, covered individuals, premium amounts, and any advance premium tax credit information.
If the form was corrected, voided, or does not match the Marketplace account, this should be reviewed before filing.
What to check in advance
Check the coverage months, household members, SSN/ITIN details, address, and dollar amounts on the form. If household income for the year was very different from the estimate used for Marketplace coverage, tell us before filing.
If your coverage was not through the Marketplace but through an employer, Medicare, Medicaid, or another program, the tax treatment may be different. Bring any related forms or coverage notices.
Secure transmission
Do not send Form 1095-A or documents with SSN through the regular contact form or regular email. After the initial contact, we will explain the secure method for transmitting documents.
